What is a CV?

cv.gifA CV is a one to two page document which lists your education, skills, and experience so that potential employers can see if you have what they're looking for!

cv.gifEveryone who is applying for a job has to have a CV, so if you don't already have one then now is a great time to start creating one. Even if you can't think of anything to put on your CV, you will be surprised with how much you actually have to share.

Our Skills Translator on floor three will explain further what skills you can add to your CV!

  • Why is a CV important?

cv.gifIt's often the first thing that your employer will see when you apply, so you need to make sure that you do yourself justice and clearly show you're fit for the role.

cv.gifYour CV alone won't get you the job, but if it's well written and clearly shows your skills, you have a great chance of achieving an interview - it is the first step to success!

cv.gifOn average, employers initially spend 30 seconds or less scanning your CV to see if you're right for the role!

Here are some tips to help you catch their attention:

    • Make it very clear and easy to read,
    • Don't have any spelling mistakes or typos,
    • Have a strong and interesting personal statement,
    • Use professional language and presentation.
  • What else do I need?

cv.gif When applying to a job you'll often also need to write a Cover Letter to accompany your CV.

cv.gif A Cover Letter is basically what it says on the tin - a letter, usually no more than one sheet of A4, that explains why you think you would be a good fit for the role, as well as why you would like to work for that company.
